What the Hell Did I Just Read is the third book in the John Dies at the End series, and it’s fantastic. Like the other books, it’s a hilarious, wild, gruesome ride.
It feels like everyone in the story is on the dribbling edge of insanity and about to lose it. Which, given the barrage of manipulative, interdimensional shapeshifting monsters they’re dealing with, is actually a reasonable reaction.
Wong (pen name for Jason Pargin, former executive editor for humor website cracked.com), also dives into neuroscience and the limitations of how human brains work, and how these monsters take advantage of that. It’s a clever and effective trick.
I’m a fan of everything David Wong has written. It’s rare to find an author that is genuinely, consistently funny.
Recommendation: Read it! But read one of the earlier books in the series first (John Dies At the End, This Book is Full of Spiders: Seriously, Dude, Don’t Touch It).
